It’s been a long time since I’ve taxi blogged.
I drove last Saturday for the first time in a few weeks. I’ve been working dispatch phones and doing VidSF work instead of driving over the past few weeks.
Novel-length post after the break.

More Bay to Breakers
This is a continuation of a previous post.
Toward the end of my shift, around 3pm, I picked up an elderly Chinese couple hailing on the street downtown. They were heading all the way out to the deep Richmond on the far west side of the City. We took Turk as far west as we could [...]

Driving again
During my shifts this week:
I took an older lady and her daughter back from the hospital one morning. We dropped her daughter off at work first and then I took the lady to her home. When we got there she asked if she could ask a “personal question.” I said sure, no problem. She wondered [...]

The Examiner has an update on the saga of supervisor Alioto-Pier’s original proposal to considerably increase gate fees. (A gate fee is the rental price of a taxicab charged to cab drivers.)
A much more reasonable $5 increase (compared to nearly $20) was put forward by supervisor Aaron Peskin. Supervisor Chris Daly opposed any increase, notably [...]

I condensed my usual rant about peak medallions down to a 2 minute piece for a KQED’s Perspective. It’s a quick op-ed that airs during the morning drive time. It will air again on Saturday morning.
It sounds a bit odd to hear my own voice, but it was a fun process to write for the [...]

I love the premise of the Green Cab taxi company that started operating in the City this year. Sexy! Green! Buzzwords!
Their cabs DO look good on the street. They stand out and offer clear differentiation from other cabs both during the day with their bright green paint jobs and at night with their bright green [...]

Slow driving
Today was a tough, tough day to drive a cab.
I left the garage at 5 am. Nobody was out in the morning. I had about one fare per hour until around noon when the fare faucet started to drip drip drop. A few fares turned to a steady stream by the time I had to [...]

What if each City cab were to have a bright green light which, when lit, indicates fares are half of the normal price? During off-peak times I can cruise for nearly as long as an hour without a fare. When it’s dead at 4 in the morning I’ll often drive by people stuck waiting for [...]

During the shift
It rained. It rained a lot. It rained from the start of my shift (12:30 am) until the end (11:30 am).
I took a gay Filipino guy from the Castro out to the Sunset. He was a little tipsy, but we had a great conversation nonetheless. He’s on the prowl for the perfect dark-haired [...]
